This was from an auction about a month ago, and it sold for $175. What did I miss or what am I not seeing or aware of to command this price? It started at $49.99. Makes me think I should sell the nice cast one that I have.

You are a more educated consumer. At that price it should have come with the oil can.

Here’s my little secret if you want a decent spring loaded oil can holder…buy a WW2 Jeep oil can holder, paint it black, and mount it on your firewall. Looks the part and costs 17 bucks…

Or make one out of a mouse trap and a scrap of sheet metal for a couple of bucks.

If a guy has spent years looking for the one in his only picture exactly like the one for his Stutz Bearcat, he couldn't hit buy now fast enough.

What is missing is the fact that more than one person was interested in that item for it to have achieved that price.

I have one that doesn't mount on the firewall; it mounts to any head bolt that you want to secure it to. I haven't used it yet, but I have two concerns with mounting to the engine: #1 will the heat from the engine be detrimental to the oil in the can ? and #2 will the engine vibration be enough to eventually weaken or break the mounting bracket ?

From the pics, it appears that the original poster's photo is of an oil can holder for a Franklin Automobile. I have one that is identical on my 1926 Franklin Coupe. Since they are riveted to the splash pans next to the engine, if someone gets rid of the pans, there is no longer an oil can holder, either. '

I assume the high bidder was a Franklin guy, or some other make that used the same oil can holder, trying to replace a missing holder. I don't know what Packard used, but it might be the same unit. It IS very nicely made, and does not rattle, and keeps the can secure.

As noted, the Jeep ones are reasonably priced and look pretty 'era'. I recently bought one of the cheap version repro T on bay-buy it now- it is fine but I needed to rework the 'snap action' to hold the can tight enough.

As to a whacky price? It just takes two....lol...been there done that.

I had looked for something '15 specific for years...finally came up on E-bay...great shape and all...every time I'd bid, another well known Model T guy would top it, apparently with an auto bid. Rash of me, but I WANTED IT -BAD so I entered a wild number as my 'cap' for auto bid. Went to bed...woke up in the morning and there it was, the 'you have won' notice! Then I noticed the final price...in for a nickel, in for a dime...no allowance left over that month...lol
