Top Bow Wood

I just bought a new set of 26-27 top irons..VERY lucky to get them..and half the cost of when they were being made. I know Ash seems to be the best choice for the Bows but what would be the next choice??? Yes, I know I can get them from the Vendors but I can’t see $79 + shipping for 3 pieces of wood when I can do it myself…if I can find the right wood.

I would suggest straight grain hickory. A cabinet shop in your area will probably be a good source.

I just remembered. I have some very clear straight red oak, about the same size as the Bows, would that work ? Oak is tuff but will hold up under the stress ???

Remember, you have to nail tacks into the bows. Lots of tacks.
Hard woods make the job miserable.

I don't believe there's much stress on those "spreader" pieces in the later type tops. The most important consideration is that the pieces are straight grained with little or no run out. What species of wood do you have available ?

Personally, I would look for ash, hickory will be extremely difficult to tack. jb

I found a place not far from me that sells specialty wood. Going to check there.

I would not use red oak.

White oak, hickory, ash...
