2024 Tour to Eastern Europe, Hungary

Post by Sarikatime » Wed Feb 01, 2023 5:07 pm

We have put together a model T tour in Eastern Europe, with the antique automobile and model T club of Hungary in August of 2024. A 21 day tour that includes Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava with your own model T. We would be going through a lot of countryside, small villages, private old car museums, hot volcanic spring mineral bathing, therapeutic waters. Traditional Hungarian food at restaurants along with steak and hamburger or as you would like, vegetarian also available, guided by English speaking guides bus tours of major cities, emphasis on entertainment for the ladies as well, old castles and huge restored manor houses of time gone by royalty, tours of winery’s and wine tasting and much much more. More detailed information upon request.
Budapest is a major tourist hub in Europe where all the thousands of tourists every year take European river cruises either to start or finish.

This will be a tour of a lifetime.

Please reply if this would be interesting for you and if you would like to participate.
Thank you for your consideration and feedback.

That sounds interesting, Frank. I`ve done 4 European tours, three in my `29 Ford roadster, one in France with my `26 T coupe. Keep us informed and THANKS, Paul

Please reply even if you do not want a trip like this. We are looking for ideas as to what you would like to see and do while in such a fantastic location. The itinerary is mostly worked out but would like to customize it better. Frank

Les, there would be around 1500 kilometer for the 21 days. There is around 62 miles per 100 kilometer. There will be days when there is no driving due to city touring in antique buses or driving to venues and back after sightseeing to main hub or hotel. There are already 10 cars promising to take part from Hungary and most speak English. All the young people speak English, and I speak Hungarian. All hotel and restaurant people speak English and most likely several other languages as well.
Spoke to Steve Chase and knew about his dad’s expeditions to Europe long time ago. Frank

What would it cost to ship a Model T to Hungary and back?

Miles, the cars are shipped as three cars in a container. They put the three cars in a container somewhere near your location, seal the container and truck it to a port. The container lands in Rotterdam and then sent by rail to Budapest. The container is opened for the first time in front of the owners and driven off at that time from the customs yard. The cars will be returned to the containers in the same location for the ride home.
Shipping cost is going to be quoted within a month but it is also dependent on the amount of containers shipped, and from where. Shipping costs are only guaranteed for 30 days and prices are changing frequently.
It is not a secret, with todays prices it is not going to be a cheap tour, but it will be fantastic. Frank

There are laundry facilities at every hotel along the tour route that we will be taking. It is preferable to take minimal amount of clothes, but whatever you leave at home, you could rebuy in Hungary if needed. Most products available here at home are available there. Besides guess who has to carry those suitcases. The vulture truck that will be towing the trailer, in case there are problems, has a closed cab in the back that will carry all the suitcases and whatever to new locations so you can sit comfortably while driving your model T or other antique car.

European model T enthusiasts are welcome to join the tour, but, it would be nice to have the driver or the group speak English. Nothing personal, but it makes the whole group have fun together and not broken up into small groups. Hope everyone understands this. We will be from all over the country, from Canada, and some from Europe. At first you will be strangers to each other but a division by languages are not something that makes everyone have fun.
Thank you for your understanding.

I would like to thank everyone for the huge responses. As per feedback, we are planning the tour to be 21 days. The tour will take place in the third and fourth week of August 2024 starting from Budapest Hungary and ending in the same location where the cars will be picked up. The finalized itinerary and prices for the tour will be available in august of this year, once I return from driving the course and inspecting all hotels, restaurants and venues, private collection museums and container opening locations to insure a smooth three weeks. The Hungarian model T club partners are also working diligently to ensure a smooth and successful tour for all.
This means that all interested participants will have to start thinking seriously about joining the group about by the latest of December of this year.
It takes roughly two months for a container to reach its final destination in Europe.
For some it will be a nother trip to Europe, driving your own model T’s and for others it will be a trip of a lifetime of fun and memories.
We can help you in locating a hotel in case you would like to stay over in Budapest at the end of the tour or wherever you would like to spend an additional vacation.
Please continue contacting me regarding additional ideas and concerns.

Thank you for your consideration.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you have thought about what a fun tour it would be, please let us know. We would like to have some idea of number of people interested in this tour to Eastern Europe. This does not mean you are committing to go but simply find it interesting enough. As of right now we are considering maybe 15 to 21 cars from the U.S. and have right now 8 cars definitely wanting to go, along with one from Vienna, two from Germany and one from Denmark, and several from the club in Hungary.
There is a difference in our considering hotels that can accommodate 20 rooms or 30 rooms. Same with restaurants that are in smaller towns that have more interesting historical features and hotels with sufficient accommodations.
We are counting 2 persons per car as the basic package but additional one or two passengers can ride along.
Let us know what you are thinking. Yes it is a year and a half away, but the cars have to be in the containers in 14 months. All arrangements have to be made in the next couple months to be able to guarantee a safe and fun filled tour, before reservations can be made. Hotels in Europe fill up many months to a year in advance and if we are to secure space in the exact timeframe that we need, it has to be done in time.
For additional information or clarification, please call,

Several people interested in going on this tour have requested if we could change the tour to in May instead of in September. Did some research of the hotels that we were interested in booking for May of 2024, instead of August as originally planned, and they are already fully booked and so are most of the hotels in Budapest and the same in Vienna.
Budapest is a central hub for the huge river cruise industry and is a very busy area of Central Europe. Now you know why European people interested in taking a vacation book a year or two in advance.
There are plenty of hotels in Hungary but we don’t want to go cheap and let people down by going to a hostel or a two star hotel. There are plenty of nice places available if we book waaaay in advance.
River cruise ship companies book two or three years ahead to make sure they have rooms available for their cruisers. You can see the many ships on all of the brochures on the banks of the Danube, of central Budapest.

Our Hungarian partners and we here in Arizona are researching and working hard to secure the best locations available and the best time for the participants.

Thank you for your time to check us out and let us know of your concerns and or intentions.

The final itinerary is almost complete and getting close to picking the nicest hotels for the best locations and comfort after a day of driving and sightseeing. Unfortunately the price of the ocean container cost is not getting better. Interesting to see the Europeans are also very interested in the tour. The tour will take place in August of next year in 2024 but reservations for accommodations have to be in place by the latest in January.
Thank you for all the interest.

The tour has gone back to three weeks due to too many places we want to show you and two weeks was not enough time. Since you are already there, mind as well enjoy an additional week with minimal additional cost. Can call me anytime to clarify details of the tour.

I went to Mako back in 2009 with Trent Boggess. Here are some pictures of Joe Galamb's house and his brothers dealership that was a carpet store at that time. The fresco pant on the side of the building has been repaired and repainted sense then. The Museum in Mako was very nice.

Bruce, I like the pictures of the Joseph Galamb museum you posted. When I was there several years ago it has already been redone and I posted new pictures in the Vintage magazine a year or two ago with an article about the place. You being a knowledgeable guy about model T-s and a relative to the Galamb family would really enjoy our tour, especially now that the building is a model T museum and will be spending several days in Mako and the area during the tour. Frank, I am not related to the Galamb family but Joe and my Grandfather Charles Balough were very close friends from school. They remained friends until Joe's passing in 1955. They did come over on the boat together in 1903. Here is a photo of Charles Mano Fischhof, and Joe in Germany before they set sail to America.

Shipping cost is going to be quoted within a month but it is also dependent on the amount of containers shipped, and from where. The cost for the round trip of each car will be between $7 to $8K but I have not been given final numbers yet.
I can contact you once I receive my final numbers if you wish. It is not a secret, with todays prices it is not going to be a cheap tour, but it will be fantastic. Frank
Budapest is a really nice city; I spent quite a bit of time there in the 1990s. Try to see a performance at the opera house.

How about comprehensive car insurance for the cars while they are in Europe?

This will be a wonderful tour for three weeks but there are too many hotel reservations to be made and usually they get filled up by the beginning of the year. We need commitments by latest of November first to guarantee a smooth event.
Thank you for looking.

Here is an advertisement from the Galamb's dealership from Mako Hungary. This came from Joe Galamb's papers.

Thank you Bruce. If you like I can translate the whole text for you. Just above the name on top, it states, “We are the oldest authorized Ford dealership in Hungary.” The pictures that Bruce posted, up above in a previous post, shows the building before the Hungarian model T club bought it and now that it has been restored inside and out it is beautiful. Looking for possible intentions of individuals in going on the model T tour. Not trying to hurry and make hasty decisions but making hotel reservations in time is critical.
