Hub paint question

Should I or should I not paint the part of the hubs that contact the wood spokes? I painted them but if that’s an issue, I can blast it off.

Ford didn't. The whole wheel was dipped as a unit and spun to remove excess paint.

I didn't. I learned the hard way that those mating surfaces need to be clean bare metal or the spokes don't sit right. I did have the surfaces not in contact with the spokes powder coated.

It wouldn't hurt to have a thin coat of primer on them. Paint would probably be okay too, if it's just a thin "flash" and wasn't too built-up & thick. You just don't want the paint to wear away and, by its absence, allow things to become loose. Even the least bit of looseness eventually grows into a loose wheel.

When I took the wheels apart I noticed that the insides were not painted, but there was a good deal of rust. In addition, I am varnishing the spokes, which I have been told to do before assembling the wheels. The spokes are dry and have been sealed with wood hardener.

I would have to agree with Jerry. I pressed the hubs out of the wheels to check spokes and found some rust too and so I painted them and pressed them back together. New hub bolts were used though. At least I have peace of mind that my hubs have no rust on them now. One doesn’t know what he has unless you take apart and see for yourself.
