Not your grandpa's sealant

I see people refer to Permatex as if it's a single product. If it ever was, that was a long time ago. Today the company makes many different sealants. Some folks like the one called The Right Stuff, but it's the wrong stuff for me because I'm slow and it sets up too fast for me. Ultra Black is more my speed. They also make a gear oil resistant product for rear axle seals, and a hi-temp sealant I use on manifolds, and several others.

I like Ultra Black oil resistant...yeh I think there at least USED to be one that said that specifically, whereas another similarly packaged RTV black did not! Also, I like this sealant called "Seal All", it's in a yellow tube/package. Dang stuff really works well, but it too sets up pretty dang fast, it's clear FWIW also, but it really works on a LOT of stuff. It's also petroleum proof too.

Shortly after Columbus landed, the Permatex folks offered three sealants: hardening, non-hardening, and "aircraft" (brushable). They still do, in addition to a wide variety of RTV sealants for every taste and application. They're great !
There's a tendency to over-use them in quest of the Holy Grail, i.e., a Model T that
doesn't leak !. Caution, as generous applications tend to "squish out" in places where you can't see it, resulting in ribbons and droplets of RTV material in the innards of the works. Not the best situation for a Model T's oil return line. The generous use of blue RTV by the party who rebuilt my Lizzie's motor before I bought her was evident from the amount of blue rubber fragments that regularly appeared in the transmission screen for quite a while. (she still leaked like a normal T).
To me, "essential oils" are what drips from the engine, transmission cover, pedal shafts and differential.
