1927 Touring, my front spring has 7 leaves, need 8

The front spring on my 1927 Touring has 7 leaves, the replacement at Lang's and Snyder's shows it should be an 8 leaf spring, I just put in a wanted add for one but thought couldn't I just make a metal plate the same thickness as a single leaf and the size of the rubber pad that goes on top of spring and call it good.
I need the extra height to bring the sprint set just below the bottom of front cross member to make the front motor mount clamp on correctly.
Anyone see a problem with this?

I would recommend you visit a swap meet. Quite often they have front axles and springs, or place a want ad on this forum under parts. Or ask it at a local club meeting. These parts are easy to come by especially for the later cars. Your car already has less curve in the springs and a lower axle, usually has a dip in the middle to allow the car to ride lower to the ground. You can either replace the one leaf or the entire spring to get the correct spring.
You need spring steel so it will flex as the car goes over bumps.

in so many instances, these springs are just plain pooped out - missing leaves or not

take a picture of the front of the car to show the installed curvature of the spring and then one close-up of one shackle (straight on) for review

generally speaking if you don't know the trick to installing shackles, a good spring will provide quite a challenge...if the shackles went in easily or are not being very much pulled "in" by the spring, you may not have enough arch remaining for a good ride.

You may possibly really just want a new spring...

The engine needs to be in the car and the car needs to be at its road-ready weight to get any idea how much arch the spring has. What's going on with the spring perch nut?

Pictures are perfect but you're right, need engine in the car... ;)

anyway, you can see how the spring draws the shackle "in" right now. If, when the engine is installed, the shackles go close to vertical, then that is an indication of the spring not having enough "spring" left. For now, I'll leave the rest of the discussion to folks who own your year car and can perhaps provide more and better guidance. Later cars are not my forte by a long shot.

What's going on with the spring perch nut?

Bruce: I obtained a single NOS top leaf for my '26 from Lang's, it was inexpensive and quick. And it doesn't need to be top leaf, a longer leaf can be easily trimmed. I'd give them a call, good luck, jb

Your spring has a totally different profile than the 7 leaf spring. This design was adopted in 1925, They added one more leaf, and lowered the profile 1 inch. You need to find the correct spring.

That how it appears now, but there being no weight, I would not totally assume its an earlier incorrect spring.
Deal with it after the car is all together.
