Forum is slow
I'm not sure if I'm the only one but for me the forum is running unusually slowly today. I checked my own upload/download speeds and they are normal. Anyone else having trouble?

Re: Forum is slow
The Forum is pitifully slow. I have never seen it this way since I have been on the Forum. Even with my first computer which was a very ancient desktop, without much memory or bells and whistles, it wasn't this slow. My present computer which is only a couple of years old, has more speed, memory, and bells and whistles than I need, and is lightning fast. One touch of the ENTER bar and things change, Up until yesterday, things on the Forum were that way, but no more. It think the Forum has the Cyrus Virus.

Good one Art! Maybe Chris put a little MMO in the server last night cause it seems okay now. This poor server gets a lot of use and I'm no teckie expert but it may need a "tune-up" once in a while do to the heavy use!Art Ebeling wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 8:43 amProbably using the wrong oil. Same here. Been complaining about this for a while but they tell me no one else is complaining about it. Have a fast connection and all other sites open in seconds. This site stalls and sometimes takes a while to load. Not sure if it is because there are too many of us at the same time on line and the server can't handle it or not but it does stall now and then. Try another site and it loads right up. Back to the forum and it is still not loading but will if you wait for it.

Re: Forum is slow
Just heard back from Chris. They changed out the winter oil in the server, but mistakenly replaced it with 600W. Server will continue to be slow until weather warms up and they can flush out the 600W with some MMO and then replace that with some 10W30 synthetic. Be patient, Grasshopper, YMMV

The forum seems to get fast, and then slow.
Must be going up and down hills.
Other forums including the B 17 forum that uses the Phpbb software is not slow, but then it does not get as much traffic as the T forum.

Jeff & I are working on the problem with Liquidweb our host.
This morning when I first contacted them there were 159,000 connections to the server.
We have made a few changes and will continue to monitor.

I wondered if this has something to do with how much storage space was being used to store all the post from 2019 onwards. That seems like a lot of accessible date, but maybe not.

A cookie is a piece of data from a website (Forum, eBay etc) that is stored within a web browser (Fire Fox, Chrome, Microsoft Edge) that the website can retrieve at a later time.
Websites are now required to alert you on their monitoring of your use of the site. This alert is usually at the bottom of the web page in a message that may say both CUSTOMIZE or ACCEPT they may save these choices for later use unless you set a parameter in your browser to delete "cookies" when you close the browser.
The choices vary a bit from site to site. This is what PayPal has - unlike many other sites their defaults are okay and no tracking. Some other sites may include sending advertising messages to your email etc
--
So this is an example of a banner that appears on the bottom of the page when you enter a website. It is not a good idea to ACCEPT ALL COOKIES if you don't know what they are so there should be an option to CUSTOMIZE or on the is site Learn more and manage your cookies --
--
so if you click on Learn more and manage your cookies this menu would appear (other sites may have a slide bar instead of a check mark) so once your choices are made you would click on Confirm Cookie Settings --
--
Now this is the Forum's version - so the message on the bottom is a bit confusing. Do you have to check OK to use the site or not? The answer is NO for this site, but there may have been an issue earlier either in the Forum software, your browser or even your internet provider where these things weren't aligned and that was the problem earlier. Unfortunately we don't know what cookies they have. They may b just ESSENTIAL and FUNCTIONAL and no tracking
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

The Forum has not even let me load to see the home page for the most of the last two days.
There is a C C Cleaner program that is free for the basic version that you can download and run to erase almost everything evil.
The only impact is when after you run the program, and you go to this Forum again, you will have to Click OK at the bottom again to post notes.

Re: Forum is slow
Thank you for the information. At the age of 87 I still know how to drive a Model T! But don't know much about the computer except that every version and update requires more passwords and other difficult things to do. My first computer I just turned it on and my e-mail would come up with one click. Now I have to jump through hoops just to get that up! Also learned how to use the old forum and then the new one got more complicated. I just wish modern things would still work as long as a person wishes to own or use them. I got all my movies on reel to reel tape when they came out with the cassette. Then used that for movies. Then came the disks and so I now have a complete tape with my grandson's football game. I want to copy and send to great grandson who is now on the Varsity football team at high school, when I don't know how to send it to him. And so is the way of the new "technology". It's like they don't want you to be able to use the old.
So much for my rant.
The problem with the forum seems to have been been widespread, so not in my computer because it worked last night just before bed and it is working this morning.
Thank you, whoever you are, who fixed it.

Re: Forum is slow
Norm- It's amazing of how much of a throw away world we live in. Planned Obsolescence. New products are deliberately designed to replace older ones. Then they build newer products again. It happens all the time in the tech field. New phones are produced, and are used for a few years before holders (whatever they are called) decide to discontinue their support for software or updates, and a perfectly good phone is now useless. Take the 5G Internet, there is a lot of controversy over health risks of the more powerful waves and things, etc. It puts so many good devices out of service because we have to have internet that's as fast as light... So then computers, phones and so may other things are now no good. And off to scrap they go. Same with how Internet Explorer 11 was discontinued this February. It has (probably) put a lot of computers out of service too. The older computers can't handle the higher speeds with their drives and stuff (You can probably tell i'm not a Computer guy. somewhere, someone is going to flip that i'm not using the correct terminology.) so the computers are useless. They still work mechanically, but are useless if they cannot handle the newer systems.Norman Kling wrote: ↑Tue Mar 21, 2023 9:25 amThank you for the information. It would be nice if the software companies instead of discontinuing it would sell it to an independent company that would take over the old systems (with oversight from the parent companies) and still offer the older systems for old computers, and then maybe have those systems for 20 or 30 years longer than just pulling the plug (no pun intended) That would allow people who do not want a new computer that they have to re-learn everything. I'm sure that the companies that bought the systems would have to charge a small fee so they can pay for their investment in the old systems. In my mind, it would be a win for everyone. The parent companies (Microsoft) would gain money from selling the old systems, the customers who choose to keep the old systems would still be able to do so, and the company that bought the system would have employees, and revenue from fees from the customers who use the old systems. I'm sure that this is probably all wrong, but in theory it sounds good. I know that some film companies still develop rolls of film,(for a price) there's a good one out in California I think. So some of the old technology is still used. Film is still superior in capturing small details especially in black and white than digital. These technologies should not just be erased in the name of progress because they are not as efficient as the new ones. Efficiency is great, and important, but it should not be the only deciding factor. Old technologies are sometimes more time tested and reliable then the new since it has had the bugs worked out. We still need to develop better ways of doing things, but we should not just erase everything else in the name of efficiency.
Anyway, now since I got all off subject. It seems that the slowness of the forum is going in cycles. It's fast, and then slow, and then sometimes is completely unavailable. from 2pm or so, until sometime last night (after 8pm) the form was inaccessible. It said that it had redirected me too many times and would not allow me to access the page. Now (obviously) it's working. Thank you to whoever fixed it. Hope it continues to work. Maybe too many people are into the Model T and it crashed the forum.

Re: Forum is slow
The problem was not with our individual computers---for a goodly while no one could access the forum. We need to thank Chris and Jeff for dealing with what must sometimes seem a thankless task.

We take so many things for granted when they work. When they don't, it's a real shock and we see how much we miss them.
Thanks for getting us back.

Yes, thanks to BOTH. And yep, it's a thankless task...as some of the "newbies" here have no idea of the back and forth arguing back in 2019 when the format switched. Both admins were in the "hot seat" for a while. Very few of us "old timers" like change. Unless it rattles in our pockets!

Re: Forum is slow
seems to be working well now.
I really wish things in technology had been treated the same way as transportation.
People walking ,biking, riding horse back or buggy, still have the right of way over cars and trucks to use the hwys in the US.
Our hobby would be almost impossible to enjoy if the transportation industry were handled the same way as computers.
BUT it is headed that way if you pay attention to details in the news.
Everytime a new car model comes out,the old 1 can still use the road,as with our Model T's. If the transportation industry were done the same as computers, we would be forever in debt for new cars and none of the old 1's would be usable.

Re: Forum is slow
It’s been the same on the EFR (Early Ford) site for awhile. Wonder if it’s the platform/provider? Thanks Chris for looking into it.

Re: Forum is slow
Rob, interesting. For most of three days now, I have barely had occasional access to this forum, and at that it usually lasted for a few minutes at most. However I went to the EFR and had no trouble with them whatsoever! Rich Eagle posted some pictures, Herb I, and I made comments. I looked in more often than usual just to make sure the whole internet wasn't down, as even the AACA forums were down much of yesterday with similar error messages as with this forum.
The only issue with the EFR is its usual lack of traffic and activity!

Re: Forum is slow
All of the forums that I look at that use the PHpbb software, Model T, Early Ford, B 17 forum are working quickly. I wonder if it has anything to do with the geography and signals not able to reach certain areas?... Thank you to Chris and Jeff for fixing it for all of us!

Re: Forum is slow
As a general rule, if you're having trouble accessing a site it's a good idea to try it in 'private mode' (some browsers may call it 'anonymous' mode).
If you find that works ok then clearing out your cache may be all that's needed to fix the problem in 'normal' mode, sometimes it can also assist in identifying a problematic extension.
This was likely not the source of the original problem (which I also had), however as the site largely seems back to normal now I suggest that if you're still experiencing an issue it may simply be that your browser has 'bad' historic data in its cache.
Luke.
