Anyone seen a hub like this?
During our club's tech session last night, Joe Bell showed us a rear wheel with an interesting hub on it. As you can see it's got six "flats" on it that are also pretty well beat to crap. Apparently someone had trouble getting the wheel off the axle. The felloe clamps do indicate it's a Hayes wheel FWIW. Anyone seen one like it? Aftermarket hub maybe?

Re: Anyone seen a hub like this?
Here's my thoughts...
The think the hexed part is a large nut that holds the wheel on the hub. Removing the nut would allow the wheel to come off the hub and allow for a "quick change" to put on a spare wheel/tire. The spokes appear to have a liner, with flanges on each side, to keep the spokes clamped up snug when the wheel is removed.
A neat trick for non-demountable tire changes!

It does look like it has a large nut that’s been tightened up from time to time over the years. You can tell it’s had a drift or something being used to tighten it on clockwise. Interesting

Appears to be a demountable hub.

When you get it apart, it would be neat to see the detailed components & how they fit & lock together.

Re: Anyone seen a hub like this?
Looks like Ford learned from the aftermarket folks there was a better or easier way to change a flat. Ford came out with the demountable rims a few years later! I don’t recall seeing those at swap meets but maybe I wasn’t looking for them either. After using the minute hubs over the years you probably didn’t see very many survivors over time that weren’t beat up.
