When using the aluminum seals for the rear axles. Do you need to put a steel washer on outside of the bearing before installing the aluminum seal. Would this keep the bearing from cutting the seal.

Won't need that steel washer with the modern alum cap.

The seal is placed deep into the body of the cap, and Hyatt face can't contact the neoprene seal.

Just make sure you have the right size. The OD of the axle housing is a little smaller pre-1919 and larger from them on. A Ruckstell housing uses the larger size.

I have had the key slide into the seal and cut it. (during assembly) I have used a thin washer but a tight-fitting key would make the washer unnecessary.
Those new seals are pretty nice.

I installed the new style seals on my ‘24 touring when I installed new axles. Should not have oil drips anyway and keep wheels clean!

Some tape over the axle taper during install can protect against cutting the neoprene seal. No steel washer required.
