glass for ammeter gauge cracked
Hi All,
Does anybody know of a source for the glass for an original Ford ammeter gauge? I cracked mine trying to press it into a repro instrument cluster (name?)
Thanks,
John
Was there a better way/right way to press the ammeter in to the hole? Or is there just a difference between original opening and repro openings?

Re: glass for ammeter gauge cracked
Can we assume its a small ammeter for 1926/27. The bezel holding the glass & indicator plate has a centering raised area to fit into the rectangular notch on the top of the hole. Also the tabs on the bezel need to be flattened when inserting into the curved notches in the plate. press on the bezel when inserting not the glass. I may have a spare glass - will email you if I doNY John T wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2023 10:44 amHi All,

Thanks Frank,
I'll check if it's an early or later 26 plate. The ammeter is the small script one with a flat bezel. For some reason, when I put it in and hooked it up, no power went to the lights, horn or coils. Wonder if I burned out the ammeter.

Our local glass shops will make those. If you drive up with the car, they might enjoy it and do it cheap.

Rumor has it, that your better HDW stores have a selection of flashlight glass lenses.
That was the case several years ago @ the local ACE hardware.
Seen em, but never bought any personally.

I cut out a piece of Lexan for that kind of thing.

The small ammeter is the same for the early to lat '26 switch plate. Send me the measurements of the diameter of the broken one (or the indicator plate) to be sure its the same size. Just postage for what I may have - unfortunately it may be more than 1/4 inch if so postage about $5 for First Class

A good source of thin glass is the dollar store.
I have found 11 x 16 picture frames with thin glass for $1.
That's big enough to give you several chances to get it right.
Thrift stores are also a good source of used picture frames with thin glass.
Most glass shops do not carry thin glass.
I use a circle glass cutter to make new glass for HCCT meters.
I learned how to cut glass on YouTube.

Re: glass for ammeter gauge cracked
Another option is the ammeter that Tractor Supply and other sources sell. The cost is $11.97 at Tractor Supply.
This gauge has 30 - 0 - 30 numbers and fits perfect in the 1926-27 panel. Si it lends itself to Ts with an alternator upgrade.
I just used an aircraft nibbler tool to make the adapter a litle larger inside and the gauge slid right in.
Now it can be used for the earlier 1917 to 1927 panels.
