Broken Crank Club

Well it finally happened to me. During the Thursday tour at the MTFCA, I broke a crank on my 24 Depot Hack. We were on the return trip from the Carillon Historical Park and about 10 miles from the MTFCA Museum when it happened. A loud knocking from the engine and we pulled over. A few minutes later, here comes Jerry Kramer to the rescue. He was only a few miles from his house. He drove his T there and returned with a truck and trailer. THANK YOU JERRY!

Fortunately, I have been saving a SCAT crank at the house in case this ever happened. I will pull the engine and take it to Ron's Machine Shop to get in the que for a total rebuild.

Admission into the brotherhood is testament to the fact that you have finally arrived. I joined 3 years ago and am better for it. Welcome my friend, we have been waiting for you.

Sad of course, but it could have been worse.
Cheers,

I joined the club 4 years ago, after almost 50 years of T driving. Keith said it could have been worse! My son had the block destroyed when he had a break. Cross your fingers that you don't have the same.
Hoping for the best.

It's a tough club to join, but I achieved my membership many years ago. I then renewed that membership. The solution was to use Scat cranks in my rebuilds, as can be attested to Kevin. I now keep a few Scats on hand, for myself or close friends.

Yep… happened to me too back in ‘76 on the Glidden Tour in Colorado. I determined the cause at the time. Do you have any idea as to the ‘why’?… I feel your pain 😞

Hello Rod,

My condolences for your misfortune. You were wise to put aside a Scat crankshaft for the day which you knew would come as they can be on a months long backlog.

I am a two time member of the club. 🙄

Sad! This is one of he weak points of the Model T. My grandfather told of that happening back in 1926 with a car only a couple years ago. Happened on a cross country trip. The car was towed into a Ford dealer and fixed overnight. Now I don't think a Ford dealer would even know much about Model T's.
Sorry for your problem.

Look on the bright side. If you have broken one, It means you have also had the pleasure of driving your T. I drove for 25 years, numerous T's and many thousands of miles before it finally happened to me! Wouldn't trade those miles for anything! Also have learned a lot about how not to drive and also how to preserve the life of a crank. I think many breakages are a result of poor driving habits, poor set up and just plain old worn out motors. Well sorted and rebuilt to proper specs will surely reduce the chances of a breakage.

Question: I’m in N.J. Exactly where would I have to ship my block for babbit replacement and what would the approximate cost be including one of the later cranks?

Charlie.... Our local babbitt machine shop is in Strasburg Pennsylvania .,..... Schwalms Babbitted Bearings , still run by Ora Landis. ... www.schwalms.com. ..... This shop did our engine over 20 years ago..., His shop is just down the hill on Georgetown road a little bit south of the railroad Museum.

We did the same, and the trip wasn't that bad.., Ora's father passed last month.
