Advice on starter problem please.

I have a 23 roadster car. I have a problem that the starter doesn't turn the engine over. The engine is free to turn by hand. I have had the motor refurbished and it functions well off the car. I need a bit of guidance please. There is a toothed gear wheel for the starter to engage with once it starts to spin - I presume that should turn when the engine is turned by hand. Is that correct?

Len,

First, pay no attention to "Ronald" the AI bot.

Tell us more about what the starter does or does not do. When it's in the car, is it completely dead? Does it spin at all? Does it engage the engine but still unable to turn the engine over? Can you show a picture of the starter bendix?

The toothed gear on the starter is part of the bendix drive. When the starter is activated the gear moves on the spiral to engage the flywheel ring gear. when you release the starter switch the bendix spring retracts the gear. If the gear is not retracting then the bendix will need rebuilding or replaced.

If you're referring to the big ring gear on the flywheel, yes. It turns with the engine. When you use the electric starter, the small Bendix gear on the starter shaft moves the big ring gear on the flywheel.

I hope you removed the Bendix before taking out the starter.

To know or your starter is working right ,
The best way is to test them .
