I plan on having a glass co put safety glass in my 26 touring windshield frame. I'm using a reproduction frame. I read that it is held in place with fabric tape and that most glass Companies use black silicone. I'm ok with them using silicone. I've read about issues with the frame flexing when driving and the glass cracking. Should I tell the glass Company to leave a bit of room in the grove where the glass fits?

some say toe may toe...some say tom ahh toe.

I have always used what is called bedding tape. Looks like rubberized masking tape.

You may find stock safety glass possibly a little thicker or thinner than your plate glass...check that first. Thinner no problem with bedding tape...thicker going probably work against you?

The principle of bedding tape is easy. You can look on the net, but it comes in thicknesses almost like a feeler gauge. Set the glass in the channel or frame, use a real feeler to find the clearance gap as exist...make that gap fill happen with several layers of different bedding tape if you can't find an exact. Walk the bedding tape around, be nice to yourself at corners and no bunch. When all done, just run a sharp razor around the inside of the frame/channel...always good to go. I'd imagine any glass guy worth his salt would know how to work with bedding tape. Problem solved?

Robert, there is no leaving room in the groove. If the glass shop knows what they are doing, stay out of the way and let them do it. If they have never done a old car before walk away and find another shop.

I installed new safety glass in my ‘24 touring. I used new original style brass channel strips that you first press onto the sides & bottom of the glass. Then very carefully start the ends into the frame and using a rubber mallet, gently tap on ends of glass. Take to keep the glass going down into the frame evenly as possible. Once you get the glass down to the bottom of frame, it will take a little more effort to get bottom brass channel to go into the windshield frame. I used no silicone or other sealer. If I could do this, so can you!Good luck!

I forgot to men to mention, I too bought a new reproduction bottom frame and like I said it fit snug, but that is the nature of the brass pressing against the glass as it goes into the frame channel. Good luck!

I can't wait to try to get the rubber seal in. I tried just to see how it will go and it looks like I'm going to need my come a long and some grease. Ha!!

Yep, use some lube, and pull away straight into the channel, you'll get it!

I used an aerosol spray graphite to lube the rubber seal and channel with great success. It leaves no film or mess.

Will give it a try today!
