Rear axle question

My beloved '13 touring grenaded its rear end on a nice summer evening drive recently. Lots of damage. . . .ring gear climbed over the pinion or vice versa, destroyed u'joint, shattered pinion bearing housing, etc.
Before I start collecting used parts (you'll see a plea for those here in a few weeks most likely), I have a fitment question. Since I need a pinion bearing housing (or whatever it is called), I'd like to know if an open spool type can be substituted for a closed spool type. I realize my rear axle won't be 'authentic' for a '13 if I were to use an open spool housing, but I would like to know if it would work.
Any advice will be appreciated.

I don't think an enclosed spool is going to be that hard to find or costly to replace - just ask in the classifieds, or contact a vendor for one modified to take a FunProjects or FunProjects-like roller bearing set up.

An open spool will work. But you would need a later DS tube. (or remove the lip off the old one. (Which I wouldnt do to the early tube.)
You will need the newer style thrust washer set also. (which will work with either.)
I would look for an early spool. The early spool has the big advantage of having a replaceable outer race.

I agree on finding an old style spool. It seems they have enjoyed a pretty good survival rate.I don't remember where I got mine, but I do recall that it was pretty easy. It couldn't have been expensive. I would remember that.
If an ad doesn't do it, call the parts dealers. They all have used stuff that's not in their catalogues.

Thanks for all of the great advice and good wishes, everyone. While I hate having my 'T' sitting in the garage in pieces (I normally drive it nearly every weekend), I'm looking forward to the learning that will take place as I rebuild it. Rajo, I'll be contacting you soon via PM about one of your closed spools, and Thank You.

Got my enclosed spool with modern innards (no. T-2587-E1) , outright from, Birdhaven, (800-337-6977), can then send in a good core to reduce the price.
They know this stuff, on telephone order she asked if I wanted the raised bump style!

Update: I was able to source enough parts from contacts from friends and Marketplace to build myself a whole new/old rear axle assembly, and my Ford is back in service. Thanks to everyone for your advice and good wishes!
