Snake Oil or Functional

Someone on the Facebook page is asking what this is for, was sleeved around one axle shaft. I got one awhile ago in an estate sale with a bunch of parts. One suggestion was an oil screw. I could see this as a possibility for use with the solid Hyatt rolloers
any ideas?

Oil screw is exactly what it is
quite old concept which I suspect was pretty lacking in performance when used with 600WT oil
I wouldn't bother with it and simply invest the time and purchase of modern seals
I seem to recall a time in the past that such devices were offered by some of the suppliers (?)

Yes, aftermarket oil screws. I've found a few when taking apart rear axles. Scott is correct. Years ago you could buy them new, but I don't see any in Lang's catalogue now. If they work at all I would expect them to work in the wrong direction when backing up. I think it's much more effective in keeping your brakes and wheels unoiled to use the neoprene inner seals with plenty of gear oil resistant RTV.

I believe my father has a couple NOS on the shelf that he picked-up over 70 years ago.
If one of those screws gets get hung-up in the housing, it can wreak havoc on the axle shaft. When that happens, it can also make it difficult to disassemble the rear end.
