I left home at 7:10 AM. The first two counties are familiar territory and I didn't have to stop and ask for directions. I did stop on the former US166 for the traditional photo with September sunflowers



Later when I downloaded the pictures I was disappointed to find that the new camera had been preset for poor resolution. That prompted a deep dive into the manual. This camera has so many features I will never use some of them, and I still have to learn how to set the ones I do use.

A minor glitch in the southeast Kansas part of the trip occurred east of Coffeyville at an intersection where I wasn't sure which way to go. I asked a guy working in his yard and he sent me on a road that took me to the main highway. No, no, we're not doing that. It didn't take long to find my way back to the right road.



When I got to Missouri I made it through Joplin with no trouble. But In Webb City, due to a lack of signage at a particular intersection, I chased a wild goose around the countryside north of town instead of going east to Carthage. But eventually, after wasting half an our, I made my way to and through Carthage, and had no more delays. Without the Webb City incident, I would have made it to Marshfield. But it was near enough to sundown when I got to Springfield that I decided not to chance it. I do not attempt to drive on unlit country roads by magneto light.

Oh boy! It has started again! I really enjoy reading this thread every year! Good luck on your trip. We will all be following your progress. Thank you for going through the work every year of posting your adventures! I know we all enjoy them.

So glad things are going well after the scramble to get ready to leave. We got hard rain in Hillsboro, MO late yesterday, with more predicted later in the week, hope you don't catch any of it.

You should take the time to do it now. Well worth the effort. This year I am driving modern iron since I am bringing the speedster.
That pickup would be a great car for the trip. If you can go 100 miles, you can go 1000 miles.

Monday, September 4

Heading east and north out of Springfield on old 66 has become almost routine. This is the fifth time. But I've always turned north at Lebanon, heading for Lake Ozark and Jeff City. From Lebanon across the rest of Missouri, old 66 is a new adventure.


Somewhere south of Lebanon

It seems to be an immutable law of the Universe that on every trip something gets left at home. This time it's the flash drive containing hundreds of downloaded maps, including all the counties of Missouri and Illinois. It remains plugged into the desktop computer in my office above the shop. Not a lot of help hundreds of miles away.

Today's first time-wasting detour was due to bad advice, a very plentiful commodity easily found. The woman at the convenience store seemed so sure when she pointed at a road heading north and said, "That's old 66." Who was I to disbelieve her? A trusting sucker is who I was. Fortunately going up the wrong road and coming back took only fifteen minutes this time.

Due to the lack of a bridge at Little Piney Creek, there is a break in the old highway of about fifteen miles. South of Powellville it ends, and you have to take some of Missouri's lettered roads: J, P, and T. Heading south on J I missed the sign for P and kept going down J for about ten miles. This is very hilly country, and there is a grade so steep that it has one of those truck warning signs at the top. Coming back up I had to low pedal about a quarter mile. Eventually I found P, only a mile from where I started down J to waste most of an hour. P twists and turns through pretty forested country with small fields interspersed, and a lot of up and down. At the litte old town of Newburg, T took me up to Doolittle and the old highway.

Keep 'em comin' Steve. Love hearing the details. Wish I could be there with you and wish I would take the time to shoot a few more pictures and give everyone here a ride like you do. We're all envious. When I travel, I'm more like, on a mission. Most of the time I leave at the last minute, want to get there on time and need to get home asap afterwards. Love the drive but don't share enough of it with everyone. Best of luck.

Steve was t-boned while in his T he is in the hospital in Fort Wayne Indiana. He was thrown from the vehicle, severely hurt but in stable condition.
