Restoring original scripted shackles - anyone doing it?

I have several TT & T Ford scripted shackles that are likely not usable in their present state, expect maybe to conform to show rules. Vendors don't seem to have any TT's listed.

Frank,
I set up and recut a couple sets of TT shackles. When I was done and the spring eyes rebushed, they were tighter than factory. I try and save everything that I can.

Lots of pro's & cons in this discussion and another way to restore them for (limited?) use

The forged L shaped shackles in Frank's initial post are not reproduced, so I rebuild mine with a mig welder as Steve Jelf did. My machining is done like Mike's TT shackles, but with different mountings.
Using a piece of T model axle shaft, I bored one end of the shaft and tapped a thread to accept the thread on the shackle. The shackle is screwed in up tight to the shoulder. Then the shaft is mounted in a 3 jaw chuck on the lathe, a centre drilled in the shackle arm and machining done between centres from there.
It takes bother and time, but if you need a particular style of shackle which cannot be bought, it can be done.

I've been fortunate to be able to find NOS script shackles at Hershey, as well as spindle bolts. I doubt if they show up much any more?

RE: building up a shackle with via mig welding and then turning it down on a lathe
I knew a talented fabricator who did something similar when he did some work for my dad's Waverley Electric.
He chucked the piece in his lathe and slowly turned it by hand so he could apply the bead in a spiral and somewhat uniform fashion around the circumference of the piece. This minimized sloppiness and made it that much easier to turn it back down on the lathe.
I asked him if grounding the lathe to his welder was a cause for concern. He said he had used the method on various occassions over the years and never had any problems.
NOTE: I have zero experience with machine tools or welding. Just throwing the above out there.

This thread reminded me of a front ‘Figure 8’ repaired shackle I’ve had laying on the shelf that’s now excess to my needs. The welds have been made around the shaft circumference like Mike and Steve’s. Then machined to accept the bushings. Good nut threads and brass oiler threads. Also, oil holes clear in the shaft. $20 + postage..

On those, clamp them in a Bridgeport. I used a piece of 0.750 round bar to make a chucking mandrel. I drilled and threaded one end so I could thread the Spring Hanger (Shackle) into the bar stock. Then use a ¾" Collet to slide the bar stock into where this will align it for clamping. Remove the alignment fixture from the collet and unscrew it from the Spring Hanger. Use a mill Boring Head to vertically machine the weld.

Interesting method of repair, not just shackles - Thermal Flame Spaying with a RoToTec Lots of videos on this method
