Foto of the Day
When I take photos I often compose them like I might a painting. I thought a thread of photos with interesting colors, textures or situations might be fun. I know many of us have amusing ones here and there.
This one is of my precarious Coupe body waiting to be lowered onto the chassis. I was choosing the appropriate nuts and bolts for the spare tire carrier. These old bodies have a lot of character.

Re: Foto of the Day
When I was in junior high I got a Kodak book called How to Take Good Pictures. It pointed out that you and your camera naturally see things differently. The camera notices and records everything it sees. When you take a picture of your friend you see his face and may not notice that you're aiming too high, or that he's standing in front of a flagpole that looks like it's coming out on his head, or that there's some distracting object in the foreground. You have to train yourself to notice everything when you're composing a shot. There are a lot of other elements in composition, but I think that's the most important one.
Here's an example of paying attention to the background. The clouds are obvious, but other things are less so. The two largest trees at the left and right act as sort of a frame to draw your eye into the scene. Behind the driver is a low space between the trees, so you see him outlined against the sky from the shoulders up. The windshield acts as a frame for a small picture within the bigger picture. The headlights contrast with the dark car as a point of interest to draw your attention into the scene.

A little polish on the remaining silver on the reflector helped make this look warm and friendly. I left the dirt on the cracked lens. We don't drive the Coupe much at night but can be seen if we do.

Off to the co-op for feed and fuel. First I grabbed a bungee cord, then thought it would be better to be "period correct" securing the gas can to the runningboard carrier.

You have a good eye and artistic ability. I look forward to more pictures on this thread, and explanations as to how and why they were composed would be interesting and informative.

Re: Foto of the Day
This was planned as a horizontal composition with the moon just above the horizon. But it became a vertical shot because it turned out to be such a hazy day that the moon was invisible until it rose above the haze. An element of composition at work here is having the picture about one-third ground and two-thirds sky. Having the horizon cross the middle of the picture is usually a poor choice. In most cases you want more sky or more ground, not 50/50.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: Foto of the Day
I am glad, Steve, that you can explain some of these finer points. They will no doubt help many as you have helped me take better photos over the years.
As for my pictures, I just know what I like after I see it and don't follow any set rules. Sometimes its just the colors or the textures. Taking lots of them and tossing out the poor ones is how I do it.

Windows were often the main source of light in factories and workshops in photos of the early days. I think it gives old parts a bit of a period look.

Almost accidental shots: I saw them before clicking but they kinda turned out OK. Maw didn't see it. It's two to tell the short story.
The moon was kinda purty.
Let's see IF this turns out selecting the second pic first with this site and my browser.
NO. We wasn't kissin' or any some-such. Cool pic.
I don't believe I'd published these two from a nice trip last August and hesitate to post here yet wish to post that series in another "Toodles with Maw"...

Great pix guys ! Duey, those are unique !
I learn something new every day on these boards. Who doesn't like box turtles ? A worthy "state reptile" for Kansans !! - I see Idaho claims a state bird, tree, flower, fish, vegetable, fruit, raptor, insect . . . we even have a state horse, but I suppose we're just left at liberty to choose a state reptile county by county to send to the state house.

Looks like alfalfa. Do you have bunnies? I ask because the most rabbits I've ever seen were in alfalfa fields overlooking Three Island Crossing on the Snake. I was there at sundown, and my headlights lit up dozens, maybe hundreds of the critters, both cottontails and jacks. It was a remarkable sight.

Yup. Alfalfa, no cwazy wabbits, just gophers which we never had until forced to irrigate with sprinklers. Glenn's Ferry is about 185 miles west of us, a lot of desert and much drier than the upper valley. Were you there for the wagon crossing Steve? I always wanted to ride with them but haven't made it yet. The Oregon Trail Three Mile Island river crossing is an annual event.

Steve, the crossing re-enactment probably started later than 1971. I see the last one was held in 2016. The website states the next re-enactment is "postponed indefinitely". Too bad, the site has a number of good photos. I'm sorry, I don't know how to post a link.

Re: Foto of the Day
The Three Islands Crossing was previously a farm owned by my Great Grandfather Lee McAnulty. I remember going there to help the uncles clean up the brush there. We would go out to one of the islands for picnics. His son-in-law Jim Steen (statehouse representative from Elmore County) arranged for the place to be turned over to the state to become a state park.

Re: Foto of the Day
Sometimes they get a little hot.
That reminds me of the PBS biography of Rachel Carson, which showed big clouds of DDT being sprayed all over people.
I'm breaking the rules of good composition here by having the horizon across the center of the frame, but I think it works in this case.
The inevitable often happens.

Just a little hot . . . a perfect image of "that really steams me !". I hope the little coupe wasn't too mad !
Steve, a really pleasant picture. Rules, schmools. The "composition police" seem able ever to find fault with the most masterful of images.

We were visiting a daughter's family in Tucson. The adjustment in time zones hadn't caught up to me, when I got a photo of a 'Patriotic Tree' at sunrise. A thought to nicely share between Memorial Day and the 4th. Salute!

This is another study of Mother Natures influence. Yes, the homemade hinge is a little imperfect. Some dabs of paint and liquid rust got it off to a start and the weather is finishing the charm.

Re: Foto of the Day
Thanks Dallas. Since I paint from photos and people say they look just like a photograph I decided to save the trouble of painting them. Most of these would make fun paintings but I won't get around to it. Painting does help me take a closer look at the colors that attract me.
I'm glad for the participation on this thread.

Repurposing & restoring is what we do.
The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Re: Foto of the Day
Driving at night is a little bit of magic. Our '25 Tudor dash becomes captivating when lit.

Re: Foto of the Day
The window screen provides some texture to the vehicles out in the daylight. I thought the "Dark Side" of the gear made for some interesting contrast. I enjoy the light changes in gear teeth as their identical shape changes around the circumference.

This one isn't mine but it has so many exquisite things to like. I recall it was a Packard, perhaps a Twin Six.
