I have taken the engine out of my 18 touring before, not too tricky.
Are there any special considerations for taking the engine out of an EARLY 23 Fordoor?
I have heard it said you should take the hogshead off before pulling the engine.
Any advice?

I have a 24 Coupe which is pretty much the closed car configuration as your 23 Four door.
I’ve had the engine out twice.

The first time I pulled the engine out in one piece by undoing the usual things then tilting up and out the engine using a chain hoist. You can remove the transmission cover if you want since you will do it anyway to work on the engine.

The second time I removed the steering column and firewall and then removed the engine.
I needed to repair the steering column anyway and decided to remove the firewall.
That’s the roomiest and easiest way. It was for me.

Others will give you their idea how to do it I’m sure.

I would suggest that you leave the hogshead on so that when you remove the engine you will know what to do in reverse to get it back in. With all the gaskets to install and align, the bands, the weight of the hogshead and limited space to work in, it is a bear to install the hogshead while in the car so it would be best to install the hogshead while the engine is out of the car so as to get everything installed properly. You can wire the pedals in the forward position and tilt the engine up and slide it forward under the firewall to remove it. Jim Patrick

Pull the column and hood shelves , I use third plug hole to lift by.

Leave the hogshead on! Take the brake and reverse pedal off, it's not that hard to do, you'll be surprised at how much easier that makes things. Then get one of those engine "balance" things with the crank on it and practically stand the engine up like a 70% angle and out it'll come! I done it twice already! Good luck Tom.

Here ya go Tom...found one pic of when I took mine out, yes it's a "bit later" but overall the same procedure. This is before I really stood it up on end almost!

Flop the pedals, stand it up, twist a bit. It'll come out.

You can do it this way without a hoist if you want to. According to this method it’s easier than it looks! Or is it?

Yep and after that see a chiropractor or a neurologist after you blow out a couple of lower disc's! I wouldn't try that for all the money in the world.

You could do it by hand with two friends, but have a place ready to put it. Here is a picture of a simple engine stand I made of 2”x 4”s. Measurements are basically taken from the chassis so the engine stand is the chassis made of wood. Jim Patrick
