26-27 fuel line curve

Hi all,
I have a question about the shape of the fuel line for a 26-27 fuel line coming from the cowl tank. I've seen photos of this line bent in a "upside down backwards question mark". Is there a logic for having this shape? Is the reason to give the gas more surface area before entering the carb? Or keeping it away from the heat of the exhaust pipe? Or giving better access to the carb/choke area? Any thoughts?
Thanks,
John

The larger radius allows it to gently bend & flex so vibration and engine to frame flex are less likely to break it.

There was no method to my madness. The tube was a little long so I gently bent it to fit. If there are any benefits to the bend I used, it was strictly accidental. Jim Patrick

John,
These are two originals. They are made of rolled flat material that is then soldered.

Jim, That is pretty close…
Here’s how it is supposed to look:

Looks right on to me. I can remember I had a 1926 way back that I put a NOS original on.

If you've ever replaced the supply line to your sink or toilet you realized that the supply line needs to go straight into the fitting for a good seal. As stated above the original lines were rolled and soldered and sharp bends could split or kink the line when attaching both ends. The question mark bend is a result of making it easier to insert the line into the fittings. Also as Adam stated it gives some flex from vibrations keeping the line straight into the fitting.

I found a drawing on this forum or one of our suppliers' websites that showed the factory dimensions. That was a few years ago and don't have it now. I search may locate the drawing.

My picture was taken from above so the bend looks sharper than it is. When viewed from the side, it looks just like the one in Fig. 561 and the two originals posted by Ken. A happy accident. When I bought the car the tube was bent into a loop. Jim Patrick
