Broken lugs on split rims question

I am debating replacing the rear tires on my TT truck and would like to address the issue of a couple of broken lugs. There are two partially missing lugs on each rear rim. I have not attempted removing the rims in that there is no immediate need to do so. They are essentially broken off at the top of each. Could a competent machine shop repair them, or would they have to be replaced altogether. I believe they are Hayes rims. Many thanks in advance for any imput!

I believe some are made that way. Post some pictures and more informed people than myself can possibly confirm that.

If you have 2 loose lugs, they definitely need to be repaired for safety sake. Remove the rim and check the other lugs and see how they are attached. If they are secured by welding, a competent mig or stick welder can re-attach them by welding them from the back and, smooth with and angle grinder. Jim Patrick.

Do it look like this ? If so, easily welded. I just didn’t dress it down before powder coating.

Here's how they look.
Two on each wheel rim.
Both located near the split in the rims.

They are supposed to be that way. That’s the way they left the factory. Without the split you have to stress the rubber valve stem to install the rim and is impossible to install a metal stem rim.

Must be a different brand with the opening that way. I’ve seen several rims with missing lugs and loose lugs and welded on a few myself. Maybe I missed the brand with the split lugs. Don’t think they were all that way. If I missed the ones at swap meets I didn’t see them. There will be opinions about this for sure.

TT rear rims are a different animal than the car rims.

His rims in the picture are the way they left the factory. It’s not an opinion IT’S A FACT. The rims in the picture are TT truck 23” Hayes rears… If you haven’t much experience with TT’s, it’s an often overlooked detail.

I had assumed that these lugs had broken. Sounds like they are perfectly normal. One less thing to worry about. Many thanks for the insight!

I have a later 1924 - 27 TT with the 23inch Hayes split rims on the rear that are rusty, plus some other 23 inch Hayes split rims that are in good shape, all of these rims have the lug by the split like you show. That is so you can install the rim with inflated tire on the wheel with out forcing it on and bending the valve stem.

Brooks, I can hardly believe how good and flush the solit in your rims lines up. You are fortunate to have such good rims. Usually they are a bit mangled/hammered/miss aligned through years of being worked on by tyre fitters, some of whom were not well versed in the correct fitting procedures.
