I have this beautiful Prus aluminum head that has been sitting on a shelf in my shop for a few years now, and I'm still undecided whether to use it or not. :? I realize the compression ratio isn't as high as it is purported to be, but i have heard some stories that the higher compression heads are a lot tougher on the rod Babbitt. Is there any truth to this?, and what are your experiences with aftermarket heads when it comes to performance v/s engine longevity. Thanks.

I have had one of Kevin Prus’s aluminum heads and have run it for the past 3 years with absolutely no problems and yes it definitely performs hands down better than the Ricardo head I had on it. It has more compression and can easily pull up steep hills in high that it couldn’t with the Ricardo head. I am not sure that all Ricardo heads are really high compression, there may be different variations. Just my opinion, others may have other experience.

High compression heads can work well with a standard Model T. Just follow the rules of setting your timing as you drive for the conditions. Like any engine modification, you should always recheck your rod clearances, reset valves, etc. Hope this helps!

All the Best,

Hank

I have had a Sherman Superfire head on my Ford foe 20 years with no Babbitt problem. Don't advance the spark as far or you will get spark knock.
