Could someone tell me the size/thread pitch of the timer brush retaining nut? I would like to chase the threads of the camshaft so as to not gall the threads. My retaining nut is new and threads onto some other cams fine but not on the one I'm using.

Steve, you need a thread file to dress the end of the camshaft. They usually come with 8 different thread counts, four on one end , another four on the other end. It is simply a matter of matching the file to the thread you have, without knowing just what the thread is.
You may be able to use a die nut, but if it is difficult to start, you might cause more damage.
Others may have a photo of this tool to help you in sourcing one.

9/16-18. You may need to use a thread file to fix the buggered end of the cam for the die to start.
I went thru this last week. The nut would not remove by hand after loosening. Chased the threads. Now fingers on.
