Glass plate in the coils

Was the glass plate used in the coils used to insulate the condenser from the winding around the core or what?
Is it still used when coils are rebuilt?

I assume it was an insulator and we put it back in when we do coils.
If you are good you never take it out and just pull out condenser and tar.

The original paper capacitors have no outer wrapping or insulative covering.
Thus the dielectric strength is only what can be provided by the tar.
The glass acts as an insulation barrier between the capacitor and the high voltage windings.
