How big does the notch have to be on field coil plate to accommodate a starter? Using a 1912 magneto field coil backing plate.

I did this on a ‘15 and when you go with a later flywheel don’t you have to use a later coil ring?

Don’t cut a notch in a double stacked 1912 field coil frame!! They’re rare as hens teeth! Get a rewrapped later model field coil with the factory starter notch and use a later Flywheel with a starter ring gear. I’ll give you a later model field coil to trade in for one rewrapped....

Yes you are a rich man if you have a lot of pressed steel field coil frames with the round removable bobbin copper coils.....

This according to Royce Peterson in a post dated December 14, 2015 :

“The only coil rings that need changing are the 1914 - 1918 oval shaped units made before the starter was available in 1919.
If you have the round single or double stacked coil rings used in 1909 - 1913 they will clear a starter with no modifications.”

Also this: “Just got an email from Wally Szumuski. He reminded me that the oval double stacked coil rings used from 1913 - 15 also clear a starter no problem.“

I am planning to install a starter in my 1913 this winter.
