Late Muffler Shells

I need to replace the inner (middle) and outer muffler shells on my late pressed steel muffler; the muffler that used the extra long exhaust pipe that formed the inner tube of the muffler. The middle tube (shell) measures about 3 3/16" in diameter and the outer measures 5" in diameter. Neither Snyder's or Lang's have these listed. Any suggestions except to go to a local muffler shop and have them made?

The better place to have them made may be a heating shop where they can roll the shells like flue pipes. That's how I get them for the mufflers I build. The outer shell is not a standard flue pipe size, so they roll them to my size for me. The beauty of that is you get the double crimped join along the shell, just like the originals, not the plain rolled shell that has a few spot welds along the over lapping join like some of the repops. Made to the standard length of flue pipe sections, you will get two two shells from each section.

I have looked at getting exhaust tubing for the centre shell. It may be cheaper and easier to assemble. Again, there is no standar sized tibinf for the outer shell.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Mark, but I checked with Gasllight and they have no replacement shells for the muffler and are out of stock on the complete replacement muffler.

If these are not spot welded along the seam, maybe have it done. How often do you backfire your car to blow them out? :)
If Langs is out, how about Smith and Jones, Chaiffins or Snyders?

I don't know what I got here...pulled it off the shelf. Repro? Original? But if it helps someone, my shelf does not need to pass emissions.

Robert, what you have there is the last incarnation of the cast end mufflers, just before the introduction of the full length exhaust pipe and pressed steel ends for the muffler. Prior to this one, the cast ends had mounting lugs cast with an open triangle in the web. I will leave the timeline to those more knowledgeable.

Robert, are you wanting to sell it ? What is the outside diameter of the middle and outer tubes? If it is for sale, and the tubes are the diameter and lengths that I need, I'm a possible buyer.

I make my own inner and outer shells out of whatever scrap sheet metal I have on hand. I often use old roof flashing (weld up the nail holes) or HVAC scraps. I weld the outer shell lengthwise for strength (although in theory letting them blow the shell might be better than trying to contain the backfires?). The inner piece I have sometimes used a piece of chimney flu.
figuring the sizes is easy enough from the end pieces. Length? Hopefully your old one is good enough to get a close measurement? Length, give or take a quarter inch is close enough.

Well, since authenticity is not a must for me at this point, and since the middle pipe is solid, I have found a source of a 5" diameter, 12' long 409 stainless steel exhaust pipe, which is exactly the diameter and length that I need. I will blast and coat with high temperature paint, the inner and middle pipes.

Look in the Ford parts book. It will answer your question.

Larry, I'm not sure if your last comment was meant for me, and if so, what question you were referring to. The late muffler that I obtained with the internal pipe had a middle baffle pipe that was in excellent condition, other than being sooty and surface rust. The outer shell pipe was probably usable after doing some straightening of minor bends on the front and rear edges, and brazing up some pin holes. The inner pipe, or part of the exhaust pipe, is sound. it was just cut off from the rest of the original exhaust pipe about 10" to 12" in from of the front muffler end cap. So, all is well. I'll just replace the outer shell with the new stainless steel shell that I ordered.

Terry,
I welded up my own muffler from stainless and it sounds OK. I did not paint any of though.

Since I was not looking for an authentic outer shell for my muffler and since my middle pipe and the inner exhaust pipe were rust out free, I found this new stainless 5" diameter, 12" long piece of stainless pipe that fits like it was made for the job; no modification needed, and the stainless is at least twice the thickness of the original steel and will outlast the rest of the Model T and ME.

Terry, where did you find this outer stainless piece? Was it a random find or did you order it from somewhere?

For amn outer shell, go to a truck shop or a place that sells truck parts (Napa). A
Lot of truck exhaust stacks are 5 inch and you may be able to snag a good used section from a scrap pile. Also they have a thicker wall than a t muffler and have a good weld on the seam.

Shannon, I found it on EBAY. The seller UPSW Auto Parts still has an ad currently, however they say they have only 3 left. Their EBAY listing number is 195306884812. The price is $39.74 plus $4.95 shipping, but it is a perfect fit and I didn't have to go scrounging for it. Postman delivered it to my front door.

Frank, after checking the examples that you found, I noticed that the one I bought off EBAY was still the cheapest and best price by almost $10.00.

I was thinking that some one might get the Amazon one (also on eBay), cut it, make 3 sell 1 or 2. least cost
If some one is close to a Summit location, can walk in save the shipping and see the goods

Only 3 left on eBay seller's
