When installing rear wheels on axles do you put any oil or grease on the axle or leave it dry?

Yep, what they said. If you put grease on there, it takes up some amount of space. then when you drive, some of that will work its way out. Now you have a loose fit.

The fit of components on a tapered axle relies in friction to remain tight. The key is used to stop them moving. Using any kind of lubricant will reduce that friction, thus compromising the fitting. It is tempting to use something to make removal easier, but it defeats the purpose.
