Looks like I need to replace the band adjusting nut on the reverse band. I don't have the tool that holds the band ends together. If I remove the nut without anything holding the band ends together will that create a problem? Will the bolt come out of the end of the band? Thanks for your comments. I will certainly have a rag stuffed under the nut to catch anything that falls loose.

Use a zip tie to hold things together while you change the nut.

Thanks, I have lots of zip ties and that sounds like a good use for one. Appreciate the suggestion.

First, why does it need replacing ? To review, the adjusting nut has an index slot which rests on the "bump" on a washer with an internal tab which mates with a groove in the pedal shaft. This keeps the nut "captive" at the tension to which the band is adjusted. There is no "bolt". The threaded shaft you see is connected to the reverse pedal and the cam which compresses the band. To replace the nut (and / or washer) it is not difficult to retain the band ear. Wire, possibly a zip-tie or otherwise keep the band ear in place while you change nuts. The spring between band ears can be allowed to relax, and you wil still have enough threaded shaft to start the new nut. There is a slight possibility the reverse pedal might "flop" out of position, drawing the threaded portion of the shaft further to the left - wire the pedal in place to be secure. Good idea to be very careful not to drop a nut or washer (or anything else !) into the transmission !

The band nuts usually don’t wear out in my experience. Is the nut the correct nut? They have a notch on the back that holds the nut in place against the washer. The correct washer has a small hump on it that allows it to seat against it.
If it has to be replaced stuff the transmission with plenty of rags to catch the nut in case you drop it!

I agree with John in that they rarely wear out, but I have seen a couple that did. Unrestrained bands are wonder nut-flingers. Observe all the cautions offered above.

I didn't see it suggested but it's a Very good practice to tie some dental floss on the nut and washer when you are installing them. This will prevent a bad day but the nut will still thread on easily.

I've used the dental floss method and it's good, but knowing my kind of luck I stuff lots of shop towels in there also.
