Did I destroy may magneto?

2 steps forward, 18 steps back. Trying to solve a pretty bad oil leak coming out of the pedal shafts. Took my bell cap off for the first time, not realizing how heavy it is and I did this to the mag. Is it jacked? what do I do now?

Looks like you will either have to re-build the magneto ring or replace with a rebuilt one. Very unlikely the mag will work like that.

Yes. Removing the coil ring requires taking out the engine/transmission, and removing the transmission and flywheel. While you have it all apart is a good time to recharge the magnets. It's all a lot of work, but it ain't rocket surgery. With some research and study you can learn what to do and how to do it.

Though Norman has the best answer, I bet there are hundreds of Ts running right now and for a while that have a field coil that looks similar. If you decide to not pull the engine and just go with it, the wire at the left of the mag button needs to be off the casting & flattened back. When I was young & broke, new to the hobby, I put together a couple of engines that looked similar to that & they are still running to this day. It also appears that when the starter was pulled or mounted the cotton was compromised at some point. If that’s the case, I assume (I know, I know) you’ve been running it with no ill effect. Again Norman has the best answer so far. Now a moment for levity… have you ever heard of Bitumen roofing tar?

Any consolation, you didn’t do most of that. Very common to find exposed coils on an older motor that still ran on mag.

With the hogs head off, you can look down into the oil pan from the front and see what that odd wire is going to.

Sorry to see the potential damage to the magneto.

I wonder........... Could the obvious damage be straightened on the top & 12V put to the field coil to check for individual coil strengths on the top half (especially the one with all the lost insulation by the starter hole) & the continuity of the whole field coil??
Would probably require an in car magnet recharge
(unless you get the polarity correct. Here's where the compass recharge method would be helpful), but @ this point what do you have to lose over a full engine pull & tranny tear down?

Hint: remove the exhaust manifold & oil line before you try to reset the H/H.

So, what was the internal wire for!!!

Agree with Andy and John. I dont see any break in the windings. Ive run Ts with spool insulation missing without noticable effect.
My suggestion would be run the car and see. If you have insulation pieces in the pan remove by threading a stiff copper wire with a rag attached at the end around and under the mag so it catches debis in the rag. If the junk settles in the cup it should be stable and not be a concern.

P.S. Did you address the low speed notch & cam. Now's the time. Dont regret not changing these parts out later if they are worn.

Thanks everyone. After I'm done crying (kidding) I'll put it back together and see what it does, if anything. Today I'm doing the things I originally intended to do, replace pedal shafts, o-rings, etc. Then I'll put it all back at some point and try it out.

The blue wire.... not sure. It wasn't connected to anything, just lying there. I'm guessing when the last guy put it all back together it got caught in there?

I would put the hogs head back on and drive it as is until such time you are ready to pull the engine for other reasons, then replace with a rewound ring. I have seen some ugly mag rings on engines that ran OK on mag. If it does not run on mag it will still run on battery OK.

And should you decide to proceed as Humbelj mentioned, the car can run equal to or better than magneto by installing an E-Timer. 20 minute install vs engine overhaul until you are ready. More info here: www.modeltetimer.com

With the insulation coming off, there's the risk of it ending up in the oil pipe and the mains oil holes, I've come across several over the years that have been blocked with it.
