Speedometer cable grease

I pulled my speedometer cable out today for cleaning. I have a Stewart 160 speedometer with a wire cable. What grease should I use and how much of the cable should I grease?

With a more modern wire type cable I would wipe a light coating of chain bar oil, and feed the cable back into the housing from the bottom. This will eliminate build up of lubricant near the speedo head.

Thanks for the response. I've got a jug or two of bar oil in the barn.
