I Just Replaced Front Spring Bolt…

Howdy Forum Friends,…when I was laying under the axle greasing the APCO cap over the pitman ball I saw, to my chagrin, the absence of square nut below the main spring leaf

I replaced the broken bolt with a substitute purchased from a prominent T parts supplier. With all the 7 or 8 spring leaf stresses on this 5/16” bolt,… why is it only Grade 5 ???

Regular bolts are grade 2. Grade 5 is a very strong bolt. The only stronger grade is grade 8. Grade 5 is more than strong enough for this application.

Basically the bolt is used to keep the leaves centered in the frame and in relation to each other. The spring clip keeps it tight to the frame.

Norm has nailed it. Once the spring is fitted in the frame the bolt does nothing but stop the leaves migrating. Any bolt will do that. The T bolts have a square head to match the square hole in the frame cross member, to make the location more positive.
