I recently, against my better judgement, purchased a pre/1919 engine that had been sitting outside for decades. I was hoping to at least get a spare hogshead out of it but no luck. I cracked it. Crankcase was packed full of dirt. Out of curiosity I hosed it out and pulled the #2 main cap off. The journal was decent I decided to press on. But I noticed something different about this crank. Counterweights? As you can see, the Rod journals so far are not as good. What am I eyeballing here and is it worth salvaging?[image][image][/image][/image]

Bolt on counterweights. An accessory that has mixed reviews.

Dunn counterweights.
They have to be installed/fit & balanced correctly.
I am currently running a set in one of my T's
The original counter weights seem to be a finer casting. Worth salvaging.

Kerry that must be an Australia only accessory offset crank.
Did anyone get hurt? Looks like the block is trashed but did it destroy the hogshead too?.

Just the block was trashed, the re-build was a time bomb waiting to happen, done by someone who had no idea, the babbitt in it was lead as well.

I had one come in years ago that was done like that with the Dunn's weights on it, had been dynamic balanced from some one else, it had a vibration that was driving the owner nuts, I pulled it down had it rebalanced and vibration was still there, took the weights off and rebalanced it and it was gone? do not know if it would of had cast pistons in it might of been better? Just my two cents.

Just curious were Dunn counter weights just bolted on or were they also welded on the crank? I guess the next question is how would you balance that crank especially during the early days prior to dynamic balancing machines? Best John

I’ve been running the repro Dunn weights on my 27 roadster for about 40 years. They were designed for the diamond web crank and I fitted them to a EE. A couple days work!
But I’ve been very satisfied with my engine!

A few years ago I had this one.
It was balanced as well.
