I just bought a spare starter motor and the rear bearing really binds on the shaft. Have looked on previous posts about rebuilding starters and haven’t found the technique of how to remove the babbit bearing and replacing it with the new sealed replacement. Is it broken up? Does the new bearing press in easily or is there machining that’s required?

Usually a pipe tap screwed into the Babbitt will coax out the old bushing - new brass one presses right in but usually needs to be reamed & sometimes faced off for lateral.

Re-read - you stated sealed bearing - I believe there's a spacer required to put the bearing in the correct relationship to the stub shaft.

Yes, correct. If you purchase the sealed ball bearing style it comes with a spacer that fits between the bearing and the Armature. The Bronze Bush option is a one piece stepped down affair similar as the original ones and is straight forward
to fit as described above.
