Trying to become proficient, (well, I'd settle for just "get by") in changing a clincher tire, I saw mentioned in an archived post a reference to DVD by Fred Houston and Mike Bender. I don't see it available here in Resources, nor do I see it available at Snyder's nor Lang's. Anyone familiar with this DVD and/or know where to get a copy?

There are MANY videos on YouTube. The best (my favorite) is Flivver Channel. He has some excellent videos on how to change a tire and one on how to do it without messing up the paint on the rims. Trash Bags. This guy seems to KNOW what he's talking about.

Thanks for the reply. The videos I have seen all involve demountable rims. Not saying that doesn't involve mounting a clincher tire on a rim, but I'd like to see some instruction on mounting one on the earlier wheels, (W/O demountable rim). My concern is having a flat while on a tour, or ride somewhere and having to fix it on the side of the road. I guess there is always AAA, but...

Greg, sounds like you want a video on this kind of situation. I recommend not letting your tires get this worn.


Believe it or not, I would much rather change a tire in this situation than with the wheel or rim off the car.

Langs has them listed as DVD-1-2, but you need to search just DVD. It showed up on the 2nd page.

I am sure Snyders and others also have them. Just have to ask for 1-2.

I agree with Steve. I would rather change a tire while the wheel is on the vehicle than off. I use two long Harbor Freight chrome (slick) tire irons plus a valve stem fish tool to keep the stem in the rim hole while doing the task. A little lubricant won't hurt either. I don't want to open a can of worms but I use rim strips instead of flaps.

Fitting the tyre on the car removes the need for the clamp/s I use when doing the job off the car. The valve stem and both beads are fitted with the stem at the bottom, and the car is lowered on the jack to hold all in place. Then proceed to lever both sides on at the same time, working either side of the valve stem. If your wheels are non de-mountables, this is the way to go.

Personally, if I am doing the job on de-mountables at home, I use a table which lifts the whole deal up to a convenient working height. Working on my knees or bent doubled over is something I no longer enjoy.
