Neoprene rear axle seal installation

I am rebuilding my rear axle of which I am installing new bearings and seals.
I found out that the seal outside diamater is larger than the inside diamater of the outer race requiring
the seal inserted prior to the outer race.
Should I assemble the axle and differential into the housing first.
Next install the seal with metal plate facing outward and then follow up with installing
the outer race.
If I go this route I will machine a pusher up to insert the seal to the bottom of the axle
tube.
Sound about the right way to proceed ?

Yes. You have the process correct. Have used the sleeve puller to place the neoprene seal, just push it in with the outer non button end of the puller. Pre-grease the neoprene seal so it slips on the axle easy.
Then place a radiator gear drive hose clamp around the sleeve to collapse it some for slipping it in , align the bump on the sleeve to the recess in the housing

Sometimes the sleeve will not fit all the way in. Check that the bearing will go in all the way and then cut off a small amount of the inside edge of the sleeve till it will slip in to where the dimple fits the hole and the hole mates with the grease cup.

This is long, but it includes installing the new seals:

A piece of appropriately sized PVC pipe is excellent for setting the inner seal. A bit of black RTV on the side that hits the inner axle housing makes for a good seal.

Is there a part number for just the neoprene seal that is fitted to the modern aluminum housing? I have a pair of housings that are intact, but the seals are damaged. Just being cheap, and trying to recycle the housings with new neoprene.

Rich, YES, you can order new seals from the mfg by size. try search CRC or National seals. Look carefully at the old seal and it may have a part number.

Thanks, Gene. I have the rear axle apart at a friend's shop, unfortunately not nearby. I suspected someone has been down this road before and might have a handy dandy part number. Failing that, I will chase the rabbit a bit on my own and post a number if I am successful. I really do appreciate your response. I see you have a '12 Torpedo. My long-legged self loves the extra leg room (I have an '11. It is a sweet runner.
