Looking for words of wisdom and watchouts... I need to replace the low band spring, which continues to slip (see pic). Seems pretty straightforward but I've learned never to assume any repair to be easy. I have a new set of springs on hand, ready to go. The last thing I want is to be fishing pieces parts out of the transmission. Any advice would be welcomed...

You need to replace the lining also. Not much band left. You could switch the reverse & low bands to get you by for a while.
Squeeze the band ears together to keep the spring from slipping between the pedal shaft & ears.

As to dropping things inside, pack rags into every open spot you can find between the transmission and the hogshead. Count the rags as well. Ten rags in, and ten rags back out again when you're done. (Or 12 rags, or 9, or whatever. Just be sure they all come out.)

BTW, the washer on your reverse pedal shaft does not look like it has the proper detent to keep the nut from backing off. Or maybe it's the angle of the photo?

I agree that your issue might be the transmission bands may be worn out or close to it.
Also the poster mentioned some basic necessary things to do when working on the T Transmission is to pack rags inside in case you drop something like nuts, washers , springs and etc they will be easy to retrieve.
By the way the transmission band needs to have the indent on the washer turned to the small notch on the nut. It could be it’s a flat washer that was used and not the correct indent washer.
That washer acts like a lock washer and that’s important.

ENSURE your ignition key is NOT in the switch! Double and Triple check to ensure the key will not take an oil bath.

A new band change is much easier with the hogshead removed. Your low band looks like it needs replacing, so it might be time to bite the bullet.
Replacing the low gear spring may involve taking the pedal and shaft out of the cover to be able to fit the spring, so the cover would need to be removed anyway.
Forget the rag stuffing. If you fit the washers and nuts on their shafts before fitting the cover, you can't drop them into the trans. Just two or three turns is enough to keep them in place.

And quick way without rags interfering with grappling the nuts, washers, or the springs is to lace them with one or two doubled up and tied off Dental Floss strings. Nuts spin on over the thin floss and easy to remove as any remains are just thin teflon like fibers. Nothing can drop in when tied off.

Dan, I agree with using dental floss. But how do you get the floss around the nut and washer when taking the bands off? That’s where I have problems dropping stuff!

Regarding the proper washer comment above: the small upset on the nut is opposite the small tit that locks it onto the pedal shaft - viewing the photo posted clearly shows the shaft slot on the reverse band and being's that the nut has double lock notches, the brake band slot is at the bottom of the shaft so both washers & nuts appear to be correct.

I have limited experience with the short stub on the pedal shaft on our Canadian cars. Does that allow the springs to be removed without removing the shaft? That is a good thing, but it is at the expense of an un-supported shaft in the adjuster.

In order to use dental floss, I drilled a hole in the washers and in the nuts before installation. Removal prior to drilling requires rags and and a lot of care.
