Starter drive question

I have replaced several starter drives, but haven’t had this happen before. It looks like end simply unscrewed. Nothing broken. I compared to another one like it. I am not sure how it is secured once it screwed back on. How is it secured? I don’t see a pin. I would like to reuse if I can. Thanks [image][/image]

The cap is screwed on till it bottoms out on the shoulder, then is “staked” into place. Use a hammer and blunt chisel to deform the shaft material outward into the area where the hole is, locking the cap from turning

When replacing that sleeve after a rebuild, it needs to land in a different spot so the dumping of the thread occurs elsewhere to the initial dump to be effective. All you need to do is grid a small amount off the back of the sleeve so it winds on just a tad further, making the dumping spot engage with new material.

Besides re-staking, I always apply sleeve retaining compound.
