Note that there is a chain hoist still attached to the car. Bolting or nailing an X brace between the two upright timbers to form an "A" frame would add a lot of stability, as would adding a top crossmember chained to the car and a bottom crossmember.

The roof trusses of that building are probably wood, and it may be supporting the weight of many layers of roofing added over many years. It might also have tons of snow on it... and the trusses may have water damage from leaks in the roof. If it's a two-story building, no telling how much weight may be on the second floor.... It may be loaded with car parts and who knows what. On the other hand, the higher the car is raised, the less weight is supported by the hoist, timbers, and whatever the hoist is suspended from.

This almost always works! I've only very seldom dropped a car on my head.

BTW, if the chain broke, the rear wheels would most likely roll, (since they don't appear to be chocked), and the car would roll off of the posts. The obtuse angle of his spreader chain also adds greatly to the tension on it. Oh well, it lasted long enough for the photo anyway. :)

Setting the rear brakes would be a very good idea. Grease pits are nice... until someone falls in.

Testing to see how the 4th main holds oil. If it runs out the rear axles, the 4th needs repair.

I worked in a grease pit 60 some years ago. Hated every minute of it. I preferred working on a creeper at that time. I don't have a lift, so creeper it is
