Aluminum case (old) Warford Model 720 - How do you get the cap at the bottom of the shift lever off? I have removed the two screws that appear to hold it on but it is stuck! Another question - does anyone have a good shift lever for the above model (mine is broken off below the knob threads) or just a shift knob (I can weld a bolt with threads to match the knob) or both knob and lever?

Jerry, I have had two original aluminum case Warfords. Both have had just a plain round black knob, so i assume the balls were original. I have an extra ball if you find yourself without one. I may even have an extra shift lever, as one of my Warfords got water in it in a flood, however, I haven't opened it up since the flood and don't know its internal condition. Also, it is in storage 140 miles from me and I haven't been to the storage in over a year.

Any chance you might be going to your storage unit any time soon? I would be interested in knob and shifter. Let me know

I think “Model 720” is an early one. Usually it says “Warren, PA” on it somewhere. Many of the early Warford parts are not interchangeable with later ones and vise-versa.

Hi Jerry,
If the cap will not move it is probably rusty. Lay the trans on it's side & apply penetrating oil so it runs under the cap, then tap lightly with a
small hammer to break the rust up, the spring should help push the cap off. The shifter may need to be in neutral for it to move out of the
tower.

The two Warfords that I have are both late ones made in New York City, if I'm not mistaken.

Jerry, I wish that I could say that I had a storage trip planned, but my health is declining and I have had two hospital trips in March with another on possible by the summertime.

The Warfords I have are model 720, made in New York City. Thanks for every one's help, still need the above mentioned parts if anyone has them for sale. Thanks

Update, got the cap off thanks to Craig's suggestion, turns out the shifter is good, all I need is a knob. I'll check Amazon for a generic knob with 1/2-13 threads if no one in the group has one available. Thanks

Jerry, Check EBAYMOTORS for a ball, too.That is where I found my replacement balls. The only original ball that I have, crumbled when I tried to remove it from the gear shift lever. It crumbled in fairly large pieces, so I was able to 'super glue' the pieces together like a jigsaw puzzle. It has cracks in it from very small pieces (almost powder) that I wasn't able to save, but at least it gave me an idea of what to look for. The thread size is 1/2"-13, and the plastic ball measures about 1 3/4" in diameter. There's at least one vendor on EBAY, selling them, right now.
