Fortunately, these days there is a reasonable proliferation of emporiums from whence some of the items in the list may be procured en-route, which could all ow for 'purchase as required' and therefore reduce the automobile's load. I am thinking of such things as just one gallon of oil, less manilla rope, and leave out the piece of hardwood, as just some examples.

So two spare rims, four extra tires and tubes, and also a patch kit? Must have been awful roads at the time.

Don't forget some of the more "important" items to some folks, found just 2 pages away:

Food List:

2 slabs best bacon - lean.
5 lbs. whole wheat flour.
5 lbs. sugar
1 lb. salt.
2 lbs. best baking powder.
2 cans maple syrup, small cans
1 can pepper, small.
8 lbs. ground coffee.
12 cans evaporated milk, unsweetened.
1 roll surgeon's plaster 1" wide - for sealing cans, etc.
5 lbs. dried fruit - apricots, peaches, prunes, in equal portions.
1 lb. tea
1 can cocoa.
1 lb. self-rising buckwheat flour.
3 lbs. rice.
2 cans tomatoes.
2 cans corn.
2 boxes graham crackers.
4 quarts potatoes.
12 packages Erbswurst.
2 doz. eggs in patent carriers.
2 boxes bullion cubes.

My 2 questions would be this: Why no onions and how much is a quart of potatoes? Between the afore mentioned list of supplies (by Steve), the groceries, the "Car Kitchen" (cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc.) and whatever else you would bring, how much room was left for the driver, or even a passenger?

Thinking about the post regarding grease cups and now looking at this It makes me wonder about "placing somewhere so as to not upset when melted"

Maybe the lubrication of a ford is based on an entirely different grease that would melt out and need constant replacement?

Pep, Look on Ebay search "lufkin micrometer 1942" and there are several at decent prices.

I'd like to watch the driver getting into that rig in Dan's photo. :D

Not to hijack or change the thread:
The Lufkin model 1942 and the model 1942-1/2 are two different micrometers, very similar, but different. There are plenty of model 1942 micrometers but the 1942-1/2 is a bit harder to find.

Tim,

Checking under the hood may not be where your problem is located. Check out the inside of the driver side front tire!!! :-)

My 1919 Dykes has the same instructions and suggests that you have the butcher cut the bacon into strips at LEAST 1/4" thick. The writer states that it keeps longer that way...................???

Probably handy for the inevitable burned out rod bearing I guess.

Dom, those are old tires put over the new ones. Both fronts have them on, supposidly to get more wear out of the new ones.

One of the books in my collection is an "Motor Boys", When you read it the stuff on the list sounds about like what they were packing in a 04-06 car for cross country trips. Add in to the mix, there were 4 people in the car!

I don't think a family of four could carry themselves and ALL that stuff on a trip. Not in a Model T. The wooden board alone is 4.5 feet.
