What type of starter assist is on the first early Ford picture? I see a vertical crank handle above some apparatus.

That's the water pump - not a starter.

Don't remember the name of that crank up device, but it works like an electric starter. There is a spring in it which you can crank up and then release the spring and it will start your engine, Good for a magneto without any battery to the coils because it can make continuous spin of the crank instead of the hand crank which gives one spark each time you pull the crank.
