Almost all modern push rods are 5/16” or 3/8” tube, with same diameters for ball ends. I wound up making the 1/4” push rods for my Akron-Hed project from solid 4140 prehard rod (McMaster Carr), then oil quenched the ends. Working good with no noticeable wear issues so far. Also had to make double ball links to connect to the rockers from 5/16” rod, same hardening process.
