I have a 1926 chassis I purchased. It came with an engine mounted coil box I am rebuilding. Did they use longer bolts for the coil box mounting or are they all the same size?

1926-‘27 coil box was mounted to the top of the engine using regular sized head bolts.

You might like to find some longer bolts, clean out the threaded holes and custom cut them to length to get maximum thread engagement.

Since the thickness of the coil box brackets are only about 1/8”, the head bolts securing the coil box are not compromised by losing only 1/8” worth of threads. To custom cut three of the head bolts 1/8” longer could be a problem for the next owner if he is not aware that several of the head bolts are longer than the rest of the head bolts as the custom bolts could be mixed up and used in other head holes and being too long to adequately tighten down the head. When I bought my all original 1926 coupe in 1970, all of the original head bolts that were installed in the Ford factory were the same length. As Allan says, be sure to clean and blow out the holes with high pressure air to remove 99 years worth of dirt, rust, grease and debris. Wear eye protection when doing this as this high velocity debris can contain sharp pieces that could blind you.
