Helping a Friend with a Promise

From years back.., keeping my word to assist in the parts that do not exist. Installing a Vega Steering Box, High angle wedge for the column drop, and custom billet aluminum windshield stanchions. Posting this to show others how to do it. The key in making these, you must use a variable speed metal capable band saw at half speed, canning wax as a lubricant, and patience.

Please Note: Not interested in doing more...., I am just keeping my word.

That is one of the most informative posts here and a long time not only did you show how but you included how and what you used to compete the project. I wonder where you found that cowl piece, did you make it or find a vendor. I have the same wood firewall and would like to add a form bent cowl as shown.

thank you for the post,

frontyboy

Well finally finished up the truing of the billet on a vertical belt sander using 40 grit. I drill completely thru the stanchions and then TIG up the holes for a full depth thread.., old school. Now making windshield/wind-wing templets and setting the style as we agree on the final design. Next will post pictures on how to carve the billet the easy way.

Stay tuned for more magic.

Curiosity...
Is the aluminum piece on the cowl, tube or solid?
For the heat shields, did you use a bead roller or a press?
Is the seat center vertical piece aluminum or steel?

Billet T6061 aluminum (solid).

Galvanized sheetmetal formed on a box brake with 4,000 degree proof rock wool behind it.

Seat was supplied by customer (steel) just modifying for comfort.

Very well done Hank.
Reminds of some Herm’s post on engine work.
This what this Forum should be about. Learning how things are done.
Again, well done. Please continue doing this. Dan

The key in a good job is quality material, T6061 billet, good files and rasp. When ever you are working any soft material use canners wax by means of rubbing your file. They never plug and clean up easy. Watch your pressure when cutting on the strokes. I use lay out dye for a good contrast.

I have been using the same files for over 12 years. After 2 cups of coffee this morning.., one is in the rough.

So after all the rough in with a rasp file, I come back with a conventional double bastard and then down to a single bastard file. Then I start with 80 grit, 120 grit, 240 grit, 320 grit all dry. As you can see depending on the cloth wheel weave and jewelers rouge used will determine your sheen. We are going for a German Nickel appearance. Pretty close!

All what is left for the windshield is upper and lower channels with retainers/cut and polish the glass. Started the pull back pleated seat wrap for back and cushions.

All what is left is polishing the edges of the wing wings and it is ready for collection. Will be back after painting to install the upholstery.
