Fitting beaded edge tyres.

A recent post about problems with clincher tyres on wire wheels had me wishing I had taken photos of a recent fitting I had to do. Well, I found some on my phone.

This is a rim liner cut from a 13" inner tube.

Here the liner is fitted to the rim. Note that it will be captured by the tyre beads, perhaps making them a firmer fit in the rim.

Here the tube is fitted in the tyre. Note there is no need to notch the beads, even on these wide beads on old Olympic tyres.

I clamp both beads and the valve stem in place and lever both sides of the tyre on at the same time.

Right at the end, just one bead may have to be levered on to complete the job.
There is no need to notch the beads if the tyres are fitted in this manner.

Others do it differently.

Liner does not go between the tire bead and the rim, it gets tucked between the tube and tire.

Flaps go into the tire - liners go onto the rim.

Ok, sorry, wrong words being thrown around here. The FLAPS go between the tire and tube. A rim LINER goes between the tube and rim, but is narrow enough to not go under the tire bead. Rim liners are often soft rubber band like and easy to stretch. Tire flaps are often heavy, not much stretch and have tapered edges. Rim liners are typically used on drop center wire spoke wheels. Flaps are great to keep the tube from being pinched during installation on clincher and split rims. Many use them, many do not, and some make thier own from old inner tubes and use them as oversized rim liners...to each his own.
