Just got done wrapping the steering wheel on my speedster. Wondering what the best finish is to put on the jute. Shellack, varnish...?

I saw this on the forum several years ago and used cotton rope/ twine for this wheel.
I applied spar varnish, as I had a can handy.
As you can see, it turned the cord a light shade of yellow.

It’s been a long time… but think I used spar varnish as well. Was gonna rewrap it a while back cuz it was looking pretty grungy… but a little simple green brought it right back! After a few drives with greasy hands the yellow will calm down quickly

I wrapped mine in jute twine. I wrapped it as tight as I could and glued it in place with Elmer's Woodgluemax. I then brushed on spar varnish. I did one side in the AM, flipped it over and did the other side in the pm. About ever 3 days I would smooth off the runs with a course file and course sandpaper. The varnish really soaks in and it took about a week to get the surface I was looking for. I did not want it too smooth. I felt it would slip like the wood wheels do.

Thank you. I have a can of Spar Varnish. I'll wait until the temps are on the + side of the thermometer.

Built a '15 speedster years ago and wrapped the Fordite wheel with overlaps of friction tape, then applied coat of clear spar varnish. Looked good and felt like a race car in my hands.
