Does anyone make new dovetailed wooden boxes for coils, specifically the later, more common Ford coils or KW coils? Seems somewhere I recently saw an ad for them, but I can't remember where.

Thanks, Dan. I can always count on someone having a better memory than mine.

I purchased five for a coil up grade project.

3bay. "Model T Ford Ignition Coil Box Kit. Made in Oak Wood Identical to the Original !"

Oak and predrilled for coil top. A bit of handwork needed.

I've seen that new wood coil box offering recently myself... Just wondering if it's just all wood?... I'm sure those top studs could be transferred from an original coil, but I'm wondering who supplies the round coil box contacts that seem to be pressed into the wood before soldering wiring ????

Well there is some hand work that needs to be done to use the new boxes.

As for the 15mm (5/8 in) brass disks used for contact - a bit of effort and searching will yield the correct replacemet contact disk. Even the reusing of the disk on the recycled coil box is possible.

I had always thought that the wood used for the ignition coils was a hard maple, am I incorrect in this?

Joseph I believe you are correct...in any event, they were never made from oak. It's really too bad that despite the obvious effort that goes into making them, yet again here is a reproduction part is made incorrectly despite 60 million+ examples originally made to choose from. Not to mention documentation galore regarding them.

The brittle nature of oak notwithstanding, the tannic acid in the oak has the potential to wreak havoc on the solder joints over time - especially if they ever get wet.

It will be quite the day when an eleven spoke wheel hits the market.

See if this helps about the construction of the contacts.

Oak can have an effect on the electrical conection in a humid setting. But its that or duct tape the existing buzz coil to keep it together.

I assumed they were made from "box wood" with perhaps a hardwood top piece.

Joseph,

I did a quick search, and yes, in fact the original boxes were 100% hard maple - you are correct.

That's a far cry from oak in both looks and performance (and even perhaps longevity)…

Oh for the days of John Regan's Fun Projects with rebuilt coils in brand new Hard Maple cases! They were gorgeous!
