Quiz - What tool will these parts eventually become?

Post by Scott_Conger » Thu Jul 18, 2019 6:00 pm

Getting over a pinched nerve in my neck, so spent some time in the shop doing light work, duplicating a very handy tool.

Not all the parts are shown in this photo, but can you tell what they will become?

Ok, seriously? I’ve come back to this thread like 10 times to see what this is....

Scott, all due respect, but why are you holding out? It’s not fair in the world we all live in....it keeps us in suspense, and it’s taking up bandwidth in the model T ethos. Based on those arguments it’s my esteemed option that you give it up already. WTF are these things? we need to know!!! My only guess is it has something to do with bands.

Hank

I think I got the idea to make this on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Senior moments sometimes repeat!
So yes, there are parts for 3 tools here...not all the parts, but some of the parts...

Judging by the foot at the bottom of the photo,
it is bushing press or
it's a two speed flux capacitor.

I must admit... I am strangely drawn to this challenge.

And yet, I am completely baffled by this assembly of pieces. Having restored several chassis worth of T’s, I must say that this tool is completely foreign to me. My gut tells me that this tool fits a Chebby... but who would waste their time servicing one of those! ;)

The long threaded shank tells me that this is a puller (or driver) for some sort of press fit long engagement part. Maybe front wheel hub bearing race driver? Drive shaft sleeve puller? Transmission driven gear puller? Rear axle sleeve puller? Reverse drum bushing installer? But why all the extra holes? I’m afraid I have to hang up my pride and join the vote for flux capacitor!

More pieces will give a better bearing .....of the final tool.

You've all been very patient playing along.

Another batch of duplicate parts made...this is heat treated on the end. More to come...

It squeezes and re-peens the studs on a Hyatt bearing?!

Kudos to you, Kevin! DingDingDing!!!

I figured the cam picture would be the key to guessing...good for you.
Now for you and everyone else, here is #1, complete with the Dummy Axle that would be used on bare housings, or the inner sleeve. I have never seen the Dummy Axle, except in literature, and is mandatory for anything other than an outer sleeve with axle in place (which I suppose is it's use 90% of the time)
It's a copy of a Cantrell-Miller Sleeve Puller (made with a hex drive rather than a crank)

Hank

high praise from someone such as yourself...thank you.

you might like to know:

threads are heat treated alloy
cam is heat treated
plunger is heat treated

I put a hex drive for ease as folks nowadays aren't much in tune with cranking a tool with a hand crank...

I have an original tool, but thought this would be a fun project to do several at once and keep me away from all of the heavy-lifting projects that I have... :)

Scott, I would be a buyer for a dummy axle. I have been planning on making a dummy axle to go with my original puller. Very nice work.....
