Point gap on 19 T

Post by gjrabb » Fri Aug 09, 2019 9:52 pm

I have a 19 T with the distributor mod. Is there a procedure for setting the points on this and what should the gap be? It is running real rough and advancing or retarding the spark does nothing. It has new points, condenser and rotor on it. Any advice would be appreciated. R/Jim

I would shoot for .018.
If you had it off, did you time it correctly?
Are the wires in the correct order, 1243 for your rotation?
How was it running before you replaced the points?
Have you cleaned or replaced the plugs and what gap are you setting them at?
What distributor is it?
For setting the gap it would be the same as any points style, turn till the cam is at it's high spot and set gap. There is no No 1 terminal on these distributors as there is no key to put into the same position when removed. You could be off a tooth.
Is it set to fire on startup just after top dead center?
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

I bought it without a distro cap and rotor. Bought those off the forum, installed and it started right up. But now is backfiring and rough, it ran fine for a couple weeks then started acting up. I put the advance to the mid point on the column, rotate to the high point, then set gap to .20, still ran rough with the advance not making a difference. I then closed the gap and still having issues. Any advice is appreciated. My first t... Thanks Jim

Jim, don't count on the condenser just because it is new. I've had new ones that were bad, they can drive you nuts. Dave
