What the heck is this?

Am disassembling a hand crank coil tester and found this in a stamped brass box screwed to the base. Any ideas?

I'd be inclined to maybe call it a resistor ??

Bay Bridge Sue got mine a month or so back, and asked the same question. Should be easy to find that thread, Mark.

It’s a choke coil to put load on the magneto.

That is an Inductor.
As Dan said, it is used to simulate the load of an ignition coil when the car magneto is connected to the HCCT for testing.

Hey Dan, Thanks! That’s right on the money. Very interesting. Looks like I wouldn't need to reinstall this if I don’t plan on using this machine to actually test the magneto in the car. I sent a message to Ron asking about this the same tome I posted it here. Should get a confirmation soon enough.

ALso, that's the second one I've seen of that style in that condition.

Is it in good condition or bad condition? LOL .. I wouldn’t know. Seems to be surrounded by a shield made of stiff wires. Do I need to reinstall?

The inductor is only in play if you want to test the output of a car magneto.
It is not used for the normal testing of ignition coils.
